How Does It Operate

How We Operate

Applications in 2023 will close on 2 October. Note that this date has been extended from 30 June.

How We Process Applicants

Applicants are generally notified within two months of the closing date if they have been shortlisted for interview. In 2023, face to face interviews will occur in November.

Applicants are notified of the outcome of their applications shortly after the interviews.

How Many Fellowships Do We Award?

Generally, two or three fellowships are awarded in the range of $10,000 to $40,000 each. It is essential that applicants for fellowships follow the Foundation's requirements for submissions. The Foundation will pay the return economy airfare and the overseas living expenses of the successful candidate for up to three months, which will cover a budget submitted by the candidate to the Trustees and approved by them.

What We Look For In Applicants

The Trustees take a broad view of their mandate. In light of the Foundation’s objectives, they look for:
  • Relevance: The need for the proposal to be consistent with what the Foundation is seeking to achieve
  • Value: The desirability of the proposal adding materially to Australia’s knowledge and experience base
  • Feasibility: Is it realistic to expect that the proposed program can be carried out and the claimed benefits achieved?
  • Dissemination: The importance of the results of the fellowship being communicated to the broadest possible audience
  • Affordability: Can the proposal be undertaken within funds available to the Foundation, consistent with the Foundation supporting a range of endeavours in various fields?
